The Ballad of Jedediah’s Goat

There are 12 days to Christmas and a lot of bars to this song,
There’s a lot more to go, so I’d better move it along,
This here concerns the tale of the neighbour of a friend of mine,
By the name of Obediah and the day he crossed the line.

Now Jedediah had a goat and he called him Lucky Jim,
Jedediah had a stable where he took good care of him,
When Obediah saw his goat, he couldn’t put him out of mind,
For when it came to lovin’, he liked the four legged kind.

One night of rain and thunder, a thousand bullfrogs croaked,
And in the dark was heard the bleat, of an un-lubricated goat,
Up jumped Jedediah, to see what Obediah had done,
He reached to the cupboard to get the bullets for his gun.

Now that gun was old and rusty, from the American Civil War,
A sign read ‘Never Fired in Anger’; He took it down and swore.
Through the rain he saw Obediah, toiling behind the unfaithful goat,
He raised the gun to his shoulder; rage welled up in his throat.

He pulled the trigger of the gun; there was a Lord Almighty blast,
The exploding gun took his head clean off, Jedediah had breathed his last.
Jim the goat died of a heart attack with Obediah at the back still stuck,
Jedediah had tried to shoot his ass, but his own ass got lit up.

Now there’s a moral in the Bible or some other storybook
About ‘thine neighbour’s ass’ or goat, I don’t know, I don’t really read that stuff,
But if Jim the goat had a few bleats left he’d a helped me sing this song,
‘bout a tale of love between man and beast and how it all went wrong.
